Long Weekend of Football in Queens

Posted by on September 22, 2008

Working last fall at the Durham Herald-Sun, my shifts included Friday nights and Saturdays, which meant football and then more football. Well, I was hired as a contract photographer for EfxSports, so it looks like another fall, another bludgeoning over the head with football. I really enjoy shooting sports though and I get paid well to do something I enjoy, which is always the goal. Efx is also a great, well-run company, I don’t have to sell anything or edit any images, just shoot.

Shooting the games brought back a lot of my own memories from playing football. I still remember laying out my pads and jersey the night before a game in excitement. This photo also evoked a lot of fond feelings of waiting for my parents at the end of a hard-fought day followed by some Boston Market or Bahn’s.

A self described “little old lady reading in the park”. Very kind woman.

A Walk in the Park

Allison and I walked and walked and walked on our free Monday afternoon but were cushioned by the feel of lush Central Park grass. I now fully grasp how much I’ve already gotten used to exploring this concrete jungle.

On The Boardwalk

I approached this guy on the boardwalk and asked if I could take his photo. He pointed to my 20D and said “Do you know how to use that thing?” My first instinct was to ask him if HE knew how to use that thing. He’s holding what I can only assume is a Crown Graphic or some other old 4×5 press camera and in the 30 minutes I’d been watching him he hadn’t taken a single photo or moved an inch. I put my smart-assness aside and told him I did know how to operate my camera to which he responded, “You can take one, that’s it.” I proceeded to back-focus the first image I shot. I quickly refocused and took another one before he noticed. He didn’t seem too bothered and i got my taste of humble pie for the day and photo I liked.

The tattoos, cigarette and light coming from above on this guy in Queens really grabbed me.
